itinerary
For the Espeletia Expedition team, the acclimatization process and a pre-expedition briefing are essential. Therefore, after landing in Huaraz, we will hold a welcome briefing to meet the entire team and finalize expedition details.
Remember: If high-altitude clothing is required, it is necessary to notify us in advance to schedule a meeting at the partner equipment rental store.
LAGUNA CHURUP
We depart east from the city of Huaraz. We will pass through several villages before arriving in Pitec, where we will begin our hike. We will appreciate the vegetation typical of the Andes Mountains and have views of the Huamashraju, Cashan, and Churup mountains, as well as the Cordillera Negra.
During the trek, we'll see the melting snow and ice forming waterfalls and rivers. After a 3-hour hike, we'll reach Laguna Churup, at an altitude of 4480 meters. There, we'll pause to admire the scenery and then return to the bus to go back to Huaraz.
VISTA DEL TOCLLARAJU
The approach to Ishinca base camp is along a plain that runs the length of the Quebrada, with vegetation and a glacial river forming part of the route. After a 3-hour hike, the Palcaraju massif will greet us, followed by the imposing Tocllaraju. Finally, after another 4 hours, we will reach our campsite.
CUMBRE URUS / 5,495 m -18,028 ft
After enjoying a good breakfast, the hikers' day begins with a well-marked zigzag trail, passing through a rocky area until reaching the glacier. This point serves as a preparation area; the guide inspects everything necessary for the ascent, ropes us up, and we continue the trek. After three hours, the summit finally appears, offering a magnificent view of a sea of colossal mountains surrounding it: Ranrapalca, Palcajaru, Toclaraju, Copa, and other peaks over 5,000 meters such as Ishinca, Akillpo, Vicos, and more…
At the summit, you can stay for a reasonable amount of time to rest, hydrate, and take photographs. On the return, descend via the same route you ascended, back to the campsite. alimentarse y descansar.
CUMBRE ISHINCA / 5,550 m / 18,208 ft
On this day, as on the previous one, the trek begins in a zigzag pattern, leading to the Longoni bivouac at 5000 meters. Here, a short break is taken before continuing past the rocky area and along a well-maintained path. After four hours of hiking, the glacier approaches. Before attempting the summit, the guide will inspect all the necessary equipment for a successful ascent and the continuation of the adventure. Continuing the trek and navigating crevasses, the group reaches the Ranrapalca-Ishinca pass, where a stop is made to catch their breath, drink water, and admire the surrounding mountains. After approximately four more hours, the summit is reached, offering a splendid view of the colossal mountains that surround it: Ranrapalca, Palcaraju, Tocllaraju, Pucaranra, Chinchey, and other peaks over 5,000 meters, such as Urus, Akillpo, and others.
At the summit, you can stay for a reasonable amount of time to rest, hydrate, and take photographs. On the way back down, descend via the same route you used to ascend, returning to camp to eat and rest.
Day off
CAMPO MORRENA / 5,300 m / 17,380 ft
The expedition begins early in the morning, which is crucial for achieving the main objective. The ascent to high camp is uphill, zigzagging to a rocky area. Occasionally, there may be accumulated snow, so caution is advised when traversing this short section to reach the campsite and enjoy a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, the sunset on the Tocllaraju face offers a spectacular sight, providing the motivation needed to reach our goal. Finally, the day concludes with a hearty dinner and a good night's rest, preparing us to continue the adventure the following day.
CUMBRE TOCLLARAJU / 6,034 m / 17,380 ft
Starting very early, after breakfast, the guide will rope up the hikers and inspect all the equipment needed to begin the ascent. The traverse begins across the plateau, overcoming crevasses, snow bridges, and slopes (30º) to the shoulder of the northwest ridge. Continuing along the ridge, the route includes sections of climbing (45º), overcoming crevasses towards the summit mushroom and bergschrund. A 70-meter climb in two pitches (70º) follows, with an intermediate belay station. After overcoming this key section, the climb reaches the summit slopes that lead directly to the summit, which boasts a breathtaking panoramic view encompassing the Cordillera Blanca mountain range and some of Peru's most iconic peaks: Palcaraju, Ranrapalca, Ishinca, Urus, Akillpo, Copa, Huantsán, Ocshapalca, and Vallunaraju.
At the summit, a reasonable amount of time is spent resting, hydrating, and taking photographs. On the way back, the group rappels down the bergschrund slope to return to camp, eat, and continue descending to base camp.
CAMPO BASE ISHINCA / 5,300 m / 17,380 ft
The expedition concludes after breakfast and the dismantling of camp for the descent. The porter will carry all the logistical equipment back down the ravine to the village of Pashpa, where transportation will be waiting to take us to the city of Huaraz.
